The flag for Ars Moriendi is beginning to come together. We’re calling the flag portion of the installment the In Memoriam.
Ars Moriendi, or “The Art of Dying”, is a live art installment that incorporates craft, photography, video and performance. It takes place in Seattle over three nights on May 5, 6 and 7. The project is one of several performances and art installments happening at Barnstorm: The Cabaret Re-Imagined.
Ars Moriendi is a collaborative endeavor that will incorporate the work of several artists, as well as the community. We will explore mortality by creating a large scale, mixed medium American flag. The flag will consist of hundreds of 4×6 mylar bags, sewn together. Each of those bags will contain a portrait. Each portrait will be a post-mortem photograph of a person pretending to be dead.
With a little more than a month till the event, I’ve started to document the process of developing Ars Moriendi. You can find out more about the inspiration for the project here. In the mean time, here’s a photo of the flag as it starts to come together. In the coming days these bags will be sewn together into one large piece. In May, at Barnstorm, we’ll start to take the photos that will fill up the bags.
Come on down and play dead with us in May.
